Sandy Hook Law Needs Careful Attention

As we sit back and listen to the NRA and legislators talk about what needs to be done to prevent another senseless killing of the young and innocent, we need to be very careful not to make a bad situation much, much, worse. A proposed Sandy Hook Law needs careful attention. While no one can argue that measures need to be taken to protect our schools, we must learn to think like a predator. For those of you who hunt you know exactly what I’m talking about. In order to have a successful hunt there is a lot of preparation required to ensure success. ¬†After all the time spent in study and preparation, there’s no guarantee you will be successful. But you can tip the odds in your favor.

The simple solution, place severe restrictions on assault weapons, ammo, magazine capacity, etc….. The harsh reality here is, these predators will find the weakness in our society and simply divert their attention there. What do I mean by that? Let’s place armed guards at the entrances to our schools, our movie theaters, and most places we know that the public assemble on a predictable schedule. The predator will simply target a mall, a school bus stop, a church, polling station, etc……you get the picture. We are firm believers in that if you take the weapons away from the very people we are trying to protect, we in essence make them more vulnerable than they were to start with. So what is the solution? I personally believe the biggest deterrent is to train and arm the employees of these public assembly areas. Most sick people who intend to prey on the innocent are cowards. Cowards will think twice before targeting an assembly where there’s a good possibility that they may not be the only one armed. The mere thought of the possibility of the predator becoming the prey is a huge deterrent.

We want to interject here with some facts that come from a southern town in Georgia that proves this theory of arming citizens works to deter crime. Most of you may not know this, but there is a small town on the outskirts of Atlanta where residents are “required by law” to own and keep a firearm in their homes. Kennesaw Georgia is such a place. For the last 21 years this law has been in effect, it has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that it works. Want statistics? Since the law passed in 1982, Kennesaw Historical Society President Robert Jones noted that following the law’s passage, the crime rate dropped a staggering…….”89 percent”! This is compared to a very modest 10% drop statewide. Now you may be asking yourself, is such a law constitutional? The matter eventually ended up in court, being challenged by the American Civil Liberties Union. Kennesaw won that argument convincingly. Compared to other towns surrounding Atlanta, Kennesaw sticks out as the one with the lowest crime rate by a staggering margin.

What message are we trying to send? Armed citizens are the “Ultimate Deterrent” to crime. Should there be a “Sandy Hook Law” enacted, we firmly believe that this small town in Georgia should be studied and re-studied as a fantastic model to protect our innocent from those who intend to do harm. There will be much debate over the next several months, and there will be extremes introduced from the left that will be so unrealistic that they should not be taken seriously. What we do know is that this small town in Georgia has enacted a law that most would have believed would have turned this small town in to a modern day Tombstone, when in fact it had the opposite effect.

I would like to summarize this with a statement made by one of our founding fathers. “An unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man”….Thomas Jefferson.
